Recovery

After 2 days up at Atlanta Children's, Andrew is home and recovering well from his P-flap surgery.  The surgeon built a "flap" from the tissue in his throat to close off the nasal passages from his throat.  This is to direct his speech sounds out of his mouth and not his nose.  Those of us not born cleft affected don't have this issue and when we speak all of our verbal sounds come out of our mouth.  This should help his speech tremendously and enable him to be more readily understood.

He turned out to be a very good patient - with his biggest complaint being that the medicine was gross.  (He was on morphine, so the throat pain really wasn't an issue!)

I stayed at the hospital with him, which was a good thing.  Our attachment as mother and son has been rocky at best, but during our stay at the hospital I felt like he finally got that I was his mom.  That I wasn't going anywhere.  When he opened his eyes during the night he looked for me, and when he saw me he was comforted and went back to sleep.  I'm hoping it's a start.

Maybe we are seeing some recovery on more than one front.

Donna,
I so get what a HUGE step that is that the sight of you comforted him enough to go back to sleep. Praying it is the beginning of a big shift in your relationship as mother/son.
Praise God for healing on many levels!
I'll be praying for you all, doesn't a soft diet follow surgery?
Love,
Kristi
